Storytelling through Songwriting

Songwriting is one of my favorite approaches to storytelling. The inherent challenge is to create a story, using evocative lyrics and engaging melodies, that will ultimately be experienced in around five short minutes. The process of creating a song is immediately gratifying to a writer because you can potentially conceive the idea, develop, and eventually produce a recording of your song in a relatively short amount of time. It makes it seem much more manageable, especially when comparing it to the years of development it usually takes to craft a screenplay or stage play.

Writing music is especially fun when you collaborate with other talented artists who share the same passion for music and the impact that it can have on the world. I play the ukulele and happen currently learning piano and guitar. When deciding whether to turn on the television or play an instrument, 95% of the time, I choose music.

Remember Love is a song filled with hope that I co-wrote with Chadwick Johnson as a love letter to the caretakers of our family members experiencing the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia.
